Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Norwich, CT) - Former Sea Dog Nate Bump (2-3) worked six strong innings on one run, leading the Connecticut Defenders (35-41) past the Portland Sea Dogs (42-33) 5-1 on Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium. Portland looks for the series win on Thursday night when the two teams close out the 4-game set.
Portland's lone run came on Sandy Madera's RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring Daeges, who lined a one-out double. Bump yielded six hits on two walks and fanned three to aid Connecticut in their first win of the series.
Dave Gassner (0-3) suffered his second loss of the trip, surrendering five runs (four earned) on nine hits over six innings. Daniel Bard closed out the night for Portland with two scoreless frames in relief.
The Defenders scored three times in the fifth inning off Gassner. Adam Witter led off the frame with a rocket over the right-field wall - his 10th home run of the season. Jake Wald singled and Antoan Richardson reached on a sacrifice-E1. Ben Copeland moved up the runners with a sac-bunt and Olmo Rosario ripped a 2-run double. The home team added two runs in the sixth inning when Richardson smacked a 2-run single off the glove of first baseman Aaron Bates.
Portland had three hits off Connecticut's bullpen and stranded three runners in the final two innings. Kelvin Pichardo relieved Bump and worked two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Osiris Matos gave up consecutive singles to John Otness and Ryan Khoury but retired the final two batters to preserve the win.
