Kevin Whelan placed on the Disabled List

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Kevin Whelan has been placed on the Disabled List retroactive to 6/24. Trenton will not add a player to take Whelan's spot on the roster. The Thunder currently have 22 players on the active roster, one below the league maximum (24).

Whelan is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 2 games for Trenton, after being called up from Tampa on 6/18. He picked up the win on Monday night against Erie. Whelan was 1-0 with a 4.67 ERA and 1 SV for Tampa in 9 G. He began the season on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. In 2007, Whelan split the season between Tampa and Trenton. He was 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA in 31 G (1 start) with 4 SV for Trenton. He struck out 68 and walked 42 in 54.1 IP. He had a 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in 7 starts for Tampa. Whelan was acquired by the Yankees along with RHP Anthony Claggett and RHP Humberto Sanchez for OF Gary Sheffield on 11/10/06. He was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 draft by Detroit. Whelan played his college baseball at Texas A&M, and started his career as a catcher.

Trenton plays the third game of a four-game series tonight against the Erie Sea Wolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 PM.
