Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Akron, OH) - Brad Bergesen was not his dominant self Wednseday, but the Baysox offense lifted him up for his eighth win of the year as Bowie edged Akron, 9-7. Jeff Nettles hit his league-leading 15th homerun and Jonathan Tucker and Ryan Finan added two RBI each in the victory. Adam Loewen worked another scoreless inning in relief on his way back from elbow injury and Julio Manon picked up his 18th save of the season to shut the book on the Aeros Wednesday night.

The Aeros got things started in the bottom of the third with a leadoff single to right by Trevor Crowe. Josh Rodriguez hit a double to right-center and Crowe moved up to third. Wes Hodges pulled a base hit into left field between third and short, scoring Crowe. Rodriguez was waved home on the play, but Lou Montanez gunned him down with a perfect strike to Brian Peterson at the plate. Stephen Head hit a single into left field and Hodges came around to third base. Nathan Panther smacked a double into right-center, plating Hodges and Head to give Akron a 3-0 lead. Wyatt Toregas drove in Panther with a base hit to left, making it 4-0.

The Baysox responded in the top of the fourth when Jeff Nettles picked up a two-out single to left field. Nolan Reimold rapped a base hit up the middle, advancing Nettles to second. Ryan Finan drove a double into center field to bring Nettles and Reimold in to score and cut the Aero lead to 4-2.

Bowie surged ahead in the fifth with a leadoff double by Sebastien Boucher. Boucher moved up to third on a flyout by Blake Davis and Jonathan Tucker brought him in to score with a single up the middle. Tucker advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Frank Herrmann and came around to score on a base hit by Mike Rodriguez. Lou Montanez pushed Rodriguez to second base with a single before Jeff Nettles came up and hit a rocket to third base. Wes Hodges couldn't handle it and committed a fielding error, allowing Rodriguez to score and advancing Montanez to third and Nettles to second. Nolan Reimold capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Montanez and giving the Baysox a 6-4 lead.

The Aeros fought back to tie things up in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Brandon Pinckney singled up the middle and moved up to second on a wild pitch by Bergesen. Pinckney advanced to third base on a flyout by Jose Constanza and Trevor Crowe brought him in with a base hit. Josh Rodriguez brought Crowe home with a double to left-center field, tying the game at 6-6.

The Baysox snapped the deadlock in the top of the seventh. Mike Rodriguez picked up a one-out single and stole second base with Lou Montanez at the plate. Montanez flied out for the second out, but Jeff Nettles crushed his 15th homerun of the year to left-center, giving Bowie an 8-6 lead. The Baysox added another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jonathan Tucker, pushing the lead to 9-6.

Bergesen worked 6.0 innings, allowing six runs on eleven hits, but his offense left him in line for the victory and his bullpen sealed the deal. Adam Loewen came in to pitch a perfect seventh inning, striking out one. This was Loewen's fifth appearance for Bowie while rehabbing an elbow injury and his first time throwing in back to back games.

Felix Romero came in to pitch the eighth inning and Brandon Pinckney hit a one-out double to left field. With two outs, Trevor Crowe hit a single to right field, his fourth hit of the night, scoring Pinckney and cutting Bowie's lead to 9-7. Romero got Josh Rodriguez on strikes to retire the side and Julio Manon came on to close things out in the ninth, striking out two batters in a perfect inning to earn his 18th save of the year.

With the victory, the Baysox move to 44-34 for the year, two and a half games back of Akron for first place in the Southern Division. The Baysox hope to stay on track Thursday in Akron with RHP David Hernandez (5-1, 2.83 ERA) up against LHP Ryan Edell (3-5, 5.28 ERA) in a 12:05 PM start.

The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
