Aerodynamics...

Swept Away...The Akron offense could not solve Bowie's pitching staff last night, as the Baysox swept a doubleheader by scores of 5-0 and 7-1. Bowie's game one starter Jason Berken locked up the Aeros in a complete-game, seven-inning shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks while allowing only one runner to reach second base. The Baysox put up a pair of runs in the first and third innings, and Ryan Finan added a solo homer in the fourth to account for Bowie's runs in the opener off Akron starter Steven Wright. Relievers Erik Stiller and T.J. Burton each pitched scoreless innings for the Aeros. The Baysox then jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two and never looked back, as five Bowie pitchers held the Aeros to just one run on seven hits. The lone Akron run came home in the fourth when Bowie starter Rommie Lewis put two runners on with walks and C Damaso Espino delivered a two-out RBI single to center. Akron game two starter Jim Deters surrendered six runs on 12 hits, tying an Aeros season-high. J.D. Martin tossed 2.1 innings in relief and allowed an unearned run on two hits while striking out two. The Akron defense also struggled last night, committing two errors in each game.

That's a Relief...Aeros relievers have been excellent since June 13. Since that date, the bullpen has allowed just six runs in 31.2 innings, good for a 1.71 ERA over that span and lowering the season ERA for the relief corps to 4.03. LHP Reid Santos has struggled of late with five runs allowed in his last three outings, so if you take him away and look at the remaining reliever's last three appearances, they have allowed just one run in 23.1 innings, good for a 0.36 ERA, with a record of 2-0, two saves, and a hold. Closer Randy Newsom has led the bullpen all season with a 5-0 record, 21 saves in 23 chances, and a 1.09 ERA. Aeros relievers are 22-9 with 23 saves this season overall, and their strikeout-to-walk ratio is better than 2:1.

Trimming the Hodges...3B Wes Hodges has been even hotter than normal over the last three weeks while reaching base in 22 straight games, the longest active streak in the Eastern League and the third-longest for the Aeros this season behind SS Josh Rodriguez (27) and Chris Gimenez (26). Over the 22 games, Hodges is hitting .342 (28-82) with two home runs, 17 RBI, 17 walks, and a .455 on-base percentage. The 2006 second-round pick's 58 RBI on the year lead the Eastern League.

Southern Cookin'...Thus far the Aeros have feasted on their rival Southern Division opponents, as they are better than .500 against each team in the division. Akron is 9-4 against Altoona, 10-9 vs. Bowie, 4-3 against Erie, 6-5 vs. Harrisburg, and 4-2 against the Reading Phillies, who will be in town for a three-game set this weekend. In fact, the only team in the Eastern League with an above-.500 record against Akron is Binghamton, as the B-Mets claimed four of six early in the year.

Did You Know...The Aeros lead the Eastern League with 697 hits and a .275 team batting average this season.
