(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder starting pitcher Eric Hacker tossed 6.2 shutout innings to lead Trenton past Erie 7-0 on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. The Thunder are 7-0 against Erie on the season, and the Thunder pitching staff hurled its 10th shutout of the season. Trenton has now won three straight games.
Trenton (47-30) scored three runs in the first inning off Erie starting pitcher Ben Fritz (2-3) and never looked back. With DH Colin Curtis on third base and two outs, C P.J. Pilittere reached on an error by Erie SS Caonabo Cosme scoring Curtis to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, RF Jose Tabata connected on a two-run double to increase the lead to 3-0. Tabata went 3 x 4 with 2 RBI in the win. All three first inning runs were unearned against Fritz. The Thunder added to its lead in the 2nd inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by CF Austin Jackson. The Thunder plated three more runs in the 4th inning off of Fritz. Curtis drilled a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-0. Curtis finished the game 4 x 4 with a R and 2 RBI. Trenton capped off the scoring on an RBI single by 1B Cody Ehlers.
Hacker (2-1) yielded only 4 H over 6.2 IP. He struck out 5 and walked 2. It was his first start for Trenton in which he did not give up a run. Tonight was his 6th start for the Thunder. Hacker retired 10 in a row during one stretch in the game. Zach Kroenke and Anthony Claggett combined to pitch the final 2.1 IP to wrap up the shutout. Fritz went 6 IP and allowed 9 H and 7 R (4 ER) to take the loss.
Trenton and Erie will finish up the four-game series on Thursday afternoon at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 12:05 p.m. RHP George Kontos (3-6, 3.36) will start for Trenton against Erie LHP Danny Christensen (4-5, 3.73).
