Altoona Curve News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets used a five-run first inning to cruise to a 5-2 victory over the Altoona Curve Wednesday evening at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York. Binghamton (43-34) has now won two of the first three games in the four-game set.

Altoona (34-42) scored quickly in the top of the first inning against B-Mets' starter Bobby Parnell to grab an early 1-0 advantage, but Binghamton responded with a five-run bottom of the inning to chase Altoona starter Luis Munoz from the game after the right-hander retired only two batters. The first six Binghamton hitters reached base and Munoz was lifted from the contest after giving up a two-out single to Parnell, which allowed the Mets to bat around in the first.

Munoz (1-1), who tossed seven strong innings to win in his return to the Curve last Friday against Bowie, was charged with all five Mets runs and six hits in the outing. The 26-year old opened the season at Triple-A Indianapolis, going 3-3 with a 5.45 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) before being demoted to Altoona last week.

Parnell (7-4) used the early run support to claim his seventh win of the season for Binghamton. The right-hander gave up only one run and four hits in seven innings.

Altoona's bullpen of Josh Shortslef, Kyle Bloom, Jeff Sues and Ronald Belisario kept their club in the game by combining to toss 7 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Curve scored a second run in the top of the eighth on a Melvin Dorta RBI groundout, which cut the Binghamton lead to 5-2. However, Altoona never threatened to score again and Mets' closer Eddie Kunz closed the door in the ninth to earn his 19th save.

Offensively in the loss, Chris Duffy strung together his third consecutive two-hit game for Altoona, while Brad Corley enjoyed the Curve's only other multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Duffy, who was appearing in his 10th game with Altoona on his rehab assignment, is now hitting .313 (10-for-32) with the Curve.

Altoona will complete its four-game series in Binghamton Thursday evening with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. Right-hander Derek Hankins (1-3, 3.57) will start for the Curve against Mets' righty Jose Sanchez (6-4, 4.28). Fans can hear all the action starting on Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network starting at 6:50 p.m. Following Thursday's contest, the Curve will travel to Bowie, Maryland, where they will face the Baysox in a three-game weekend series. Altoona returns home Monday for the beginning of an eight-game homestand, which included Fourth of July Weekend.
