Albuquerque, N.M. - Playing their first-ever game at Southwest University Park in El Paso, the Oklahoma City Dodgers were able to get by the El Paso Chihuahuas in a 9-7 slugfest Thursday night.
With the win, the Dodgers (80-51) captured their 80th victory of the season, becoming the fastest team during the team's PCL era to reach 80 wins. They also became the fifth team in OKC's 18 seasons in the PCL to win at least 80 games.
Iowa and Omaha each won Thursday night as well. The Dodgers remain six games ahead of Iowa, and 6.5 games ahead of Omaha for first place in the American Northern Division.
Both Kyle Jensen and Corey Seager led the offense and each finished with a home run and triple. Jensen drove in four runs, and Seager scored three times.
Seager opened the scoring right away in the first inning with his fourth home run in seven games. He belted a solo shot to deep right-center field, giving OKC an early 1-0 lead. Seager nearly hit his second home run of the night in the third inning, but settled for a triple to right-center field instead. Jose Tabata followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Chihuahuas (70-62) tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning. Pitcher Jason Lane led off with a double and scored two batters later on a double by Hunter Renfroe. Hector Gomez later lined a two-out RBI single to right field to make it 2-2.
El Paso took its first lead in the fourth inning. After the Chihuahuas had the bases empty with two outs, Casey McElroy singled to keep the inning alive, and Lane followed with a two-run homer down the left field line. OKC manager Damon Berryhill contested the call and was eventually ejected.
The Dodgers rallied for six runs to regain the lead in the fifth inning. Scott Schebler drew a bases-loaded walk to get OKC within one. Jensen stepped up next and drilled a triple to center field, clearing the bases and giving the Dodgers a 6-4 lead.
Later in the inning, Eric Surkamp hit a sacrifice fly and Darwin Barney added a RBI single to finish things off.
The Chihuahuas reeled off three runs in the seventh inning to make it a one run game. After a leadoff walk by Jake Goebbert, Renfroe sent a fly ball into foul territory in right field. Although it was a playable ball for Jensen, he overran it, and it landed for a foul ball instead. On the very next pitch, Renfroe hammered a homer to left field, pulling El Paso within 8-6. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, McElroy was hit by a pitch to plate another run.
The Dodgers made a pitching change and brought in Yimi Garcia to face pinch hitter Mike McCoy. Garcia struck out McCoy on three pitches to leave the bases loaded and keep OKC in font, 8-7.
After a scoreless eighth, Jensen gave the Dodgers some breathing room in the ninth. He bashed a solo homer to center field to give OKC a two-run cushion.
Juan Gonzalez closed out the game in the ninth inning, retiring the side in order -- including two strikeouts -- for his 10th save of the season.
Surkamp (8-3) started on the mound won his fourth game of August, going six innings. Surkamp allowed four runs and eight hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.
Lane (10-9) fared better at the plate than on the mound and ended up with the loss. He allowed seven runs (five earned) and eight hits over 4.1 innings. Lane recorded five strikeouts with two walks.
The Dodgers and Chihuahuas continue their series at 8:05 p.m. Central time Friday night. Live coverage begins at 7:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game", 1340thegame.com, or through the iHeartRadio mobile app.
