Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (72-62) bats regained their footing in game two against the Las Vegas 51s (74-60) at Dell Diamond Friday night to even the series with a 4-1 victory. Round Rock OF Nomar Mazara collected three hits in the winning effort and recorded the first home run of his Triple-A career.
The beginning of game two felt eerily similar to game one as Express starter Nick Martinez and 51s RHP Seth Lugo found their grooves early, blanking the opposing side through the first three innings. Martinez kept his shutout bid intact through the bottom of the fourth and finally received run support in the home half of the inning. Mazara broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off home run to the right-field berm that supplied the E-Train with a 1-0 lead.
Express LF Drew Stubbs opened the bottom of the sixth with a lead-off single against a weakening Lugo that reenergized the Dell Diamond crowd. Mazara then skirted a single up the middle to record his fourth multi-hit game in five contests. The single moved Stubbs to third and left Mazara on second, but Lugo struck out SS Ed Lucas to keep the runners frozen. Lugo (2-1, 2.74) saw his night end after the punch-out with 5.1 innings pitched, five hits, one run (earned), one walk and eight strikeouts. Vegas reliever Alex Torres started his appearance by issuing a walk to C Brett Nicholas that loaded the bases for 2B Tommy Field. Field had to do very little as Torres threw another walk that brought in the second Express run of the night. 3B Joey Gallo added to the Round Rock lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Mazara and ended Torres' outing. Torres' replacement Vic Black also began his night with a walk, but finally closed the sixth with a strikeout.
Vegas cut the deficit to two courtesy of a lead-off solo blast from 1B Brandon Allen in the top of the seventh that made the score 3-1. The momentum was short lived as Martinez went on to retire the remaining batters in order to complete his seventh inning of work. Martinez (1-1, 3.46) finished his outing with 7.0 innings, seven hits, one run (earned), two walks and two Ks.
Mazara continued to produce in the second act of the series by crushing a hard single into right field for his second RBI of the game, sending the E-Train advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh.
The Round Rock bullpen solidified Martinez's start as LHP Jimmy Reyes, RHP Ross Ohlendorf and RHP Roman Mendez sealed the game two victory and evened the series at 1-1.
Round Rock and Las Vegas continue the series at Dell Diamond with game three tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. as Express starter Chi Chi Gonzalez (6-7, 3.96) takes the mound against 51s RHP Matthew Bowman (7-15, 5.40).
