Redbirds Rally But Drop Series Opener 10-9

RENO, Nev. - In a game filled with offense, a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the ninth gave the Reno Aces a 10-9 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday night.

The defeat for Memphis, coupled with a Round Rock loss earlier in the evening, keeps the Redbirds five games behind the first places Express in the American Southern Division with just 11 games left to play. The loss also puts the Redbirds record at 66-67, the first time the club has been under .500 since June 1.

Memphis jumped out in front to an early lead in the first inning, plating two runs in the contest's initial frame. First baseman Dan Johnson drove home Rafael Ortega for the game's first run, followed by Dean Anna crossing the plate after Xavier Scruggs bounced into a double play.

The Redbirds added their third run of the night in the top of the third inning when Marco Gonzales scored after an error from Aces shortstop Danny Worth. Gonzales was aboard after leading off the frame with a double, helping his own cause.

Reno would go on to capture the lead with a three-run bottom half of the third inning after plating their first run in the bottom of the second.

The Redbirds were able to regain control of the game on Xavier Scruggs' two-RBI double in the top half of the fifth inning, giving Memphis a 5-4 lead.

Memphis starting pitcher Marco Gonzales earned a no-decision. exiting the game after 5.0 innings on the hill, allowing four runs on eight hits, recording two strikeouts while walking three.

After a scoreless sixth inning from Heath Wyatt and a shutout seventh from Miguel Socolovich, the Aces finally touched the Memphis bullpen in a big way in the eighth inning. The Aces scored five times in the frame, jumping ahead of the Redbirds 9-5. Socolovich was charged with four runs, while fellow right-hander Mitch Harris surrender one run.

The Redbirds would not go easily into the Nevada night, as they loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. With their backs against the wall, Memphis cather Cody Stanley unloaded on a 3-2 pitch, crushing the offering over the right field wall for a grand slam, tying the game at 9-9.

The excitement did not last long for the Redbirds, as the Aces quickly loaded the bases in the bottom half of the ninth inning. The games winning run crossed the plate after Cody Stanley could not handle a Mitch Harris breaking ball, giving the Aces the victory on a walk-off passed ball.

The Aces and Redbirds continue their four-game series on Friday from Reno when Zach Petrick (7-6, 4.47) faces Archie Bradley (0-0, 6.75). First pitch from Reno for game two of the series is set for 9:05pm CT.
