Aces Win Thriller on Walk-Off Passed Ball

RENO - The Reno Aces (@Aces) topped the Memphis Redbirds, 10-9, Thursday night at Aces Ballpark when Peter O'Brien raced home to score the winning run on a walk-off passed ball.

The Aces rallied for their run in the ninth just moments after Memphis catcher Cody Stanley stunned the home crowd with a game-tying grand slam in the top of the ninth inning. Stanley's blast came on a two-strike, two-out offering from Aces reliever Kaleb Fleck (@k_fleck).

O'Brien started the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff single to left, and quickly moved to second when Todd Glaesmann (@toddglaesmann22) followed with a single of his own. Matt Pagnozzi (@MattPagnozzi) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.

The Redbirds elected to intentionally walk Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) to load the bases. On a 0-1 pitch to Phil Gosselin (@PGosselin), the ball caromed off of Stanley's glove and to the back screen just moments after he tied the game with the grand slam.

Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, Reno got run-scoring hits from Glaesmann, Gosselin and Danny Worth to take a 9-5 lead.

The inning started when Memphis reliever Miguel Socolovich hit Brandon Drury with the first pitch of the inning. Socolovich bounced back to strikeout O'Brien, but he couldn't get past Glaesmann who lined a double to left field to score Drury and make it 5-5.

Pagnozzi singled and Freeman drew a walk to load the bases for Gosselin. Before Socolovich could face him, Memphis went deeper into the bullpen and summoned Harris.

Gosselin, playing on a Major League rehab assignment, hit a high chopper over third base and into the left field corner for a two-run double. On the very next pitch, Worth lined another two-run double down the left field line to give the Aces a 9-5 lead.

One night after setting a franchise record with nine doubles, the Aces collected seven - their second-highest output of the season.

The game went back-and-forth in the early innings as Memphis led 2-0 after one inning, and held a 3-1 advantage into the bottom of the third. Nick Evans, Jamie Romak and Drury collected three consecutive run-scoring hits to give the Aces a 4-3 lead.

It didn't last long as the Redbirds plated a pair of runs on a two-run single by Xavier Scruggs in the fifth to go back in front with a 5-4 lead. It stayed that way until the Aces came up with the five-run eighth.

Fleck earned the win despite the blown save. Harris was tagged with the loss for Memphis.

Glaesmann and Romak each had three-hit games, while Gosselin and Worth added two apiece. Every Aces hitter in the starting lineup had at least one base knock.

Game two of the four-game series is set for Friday night at Aces Ballpark. Right-hander Archie Bradley (0-0, 6.75) starts for Reno against right-hander Zach Petrick (7-6, 4.47) for Memphis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
