Sounds Stymied against Rainiers

TACOMA, Wash. - The Sounds blasted two early home runs but fell short in Thursday's series opener at Cheney Stadium, losing 12-5 to the Tacoma Rainiers.

Nashville had Brad Mills slated to make the Thursday evening start, but reliever Dan Otero stepped in to make a spot-start instead. The right-hander had not allowed a run in his last 19 innings of work dating back to June 19, but had Tacoma plate four runs in his second and final inning of the start. Shawn O'Malley delivered the big blow, a two-out, three-run homer to help the Rainiers to an early 4-1 lead.

The Sounds waited a couple innings but eventually pulled it back to even. Tyler Ladendorf's leadoff shot in the first had already given Nashville its first run and another home run would tie it. The three-run shot came in the fourth when Rangel Ravelo stepped in and launched out for his first homer of the season. Jason Pridie and Ryan Roberts both scored on the bomb to push the score to 4-4.

As the ball flew out for Nashville, the same occurred for Tacoma. A total of seven home runs were launched in the series opener, with five coming from the home team. O'Malley and Patrick Kivelhan both ended up with a multi-homer game and the tie slipped from Nashville's grip quickly.

In the midst of chaos and long balls, Ryan Dull did his best to keep things close. The right-hander was named a Texas League Postseason All-Star earlier in the day and showed the stout Tacoma offense that it was no fluke. Dull went two innings with one hit and three strikeouts. He was the only natural pitcher for Nashville to not allow a run in the blowout.

The Sounds did call upon Roberts in the eighth after the Rainiers had already put four up in the frame. The utilityman was making the first pitching appearance of his professional career and got Leury Bonilla to line out to Joey Wendle at second.

Before all was said and done, Tacoma outhit the Sounds 16-8 and smacked eight extra-base hits. Ravelo did finish the night 3-for-3 with a walk, but Wendle saw his 10-game hitting streak come to a close.

Game two of the four-game series continues tomorrow at Cheney Stadium. Right-hander Nathan Long (3-4, 5.17) will face rehabbing lefty James Paxton (0-1, 13.50) in the 9:05 p.m. CST contest.
