St. Paul Saints News Release
TOLEDO, OH - The only difference between Friday and Saturday night were the number of runs put up between the two teams. Friday night was a low scoring affair that the St. Paul Saints lost in walk-off fashion in the 10th. On Saturday night at Fifth Third Field, it was a high scoring affair, but the same result, a 10-9 walk-off loss in the 10th.
With the game tied at nine in the 10th, the Saints once again failed to plate the placed runner. In the bottom of the inning with Daz Cameron the placed runner, the Saints elected to intentionally walk Andre Lipcius. Brendon Davis then walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Jamie Westbrook ended the game. The Saints have now played a baseball high 20 extra inning games and have been walked-off 13 times this season.
The Saints jumped out to the lead in the first as Cole Sturgeon singled to center with two outs and scored on a Chris Williams double to straightaway center giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, however, the Mud Hens grabbed the lead. John Valente led off with a single and, with one out, Josh Lester hit a solo homer to center, his 26th of the season, making it 2-1.
The Saints got their second two out run of the game in the second. With two outs, Andrew Bechtold doubled to left. Dalton Shuffield drew a walk, and Matt Wallner roped an RBI double to right tying the game at two.
The Mud Hens grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the inning as Westbrook led off with a single to short. After a walk to Chris Rabago, Jack López hit a line drive to center and Mark Contreras made a head-first dive and came up empty as the ball rolled past him and all the way to the wall for an inside the park home run giving the Mud Hens a 5-2 lead.
Wallner delivered in the fourth as Bechtold walked with one out and, with two outs, Wallner drilled a two-run homer to right, his sixth of the season, getting the Saints to within 5-4. Wallner finished the night 2-5 with a double, home run, three RBI, and two runs scored.
The Saints regained the lead in the fifth as Sturgeon led off with a walk. Williams followed with a single to left putting runners at first and second. Mark Contreras hit a liner to left that Davis dove for and trapped, but Williams was caught going back to second and was forced at third. John Andreoli followed with a two-run double to left putting the Saints up 6-5. With two outs, Bechtold hit a grounder to third that was thrown away by Lipcius allowing Andreoli to score increasing the lead to 7-5.
The Mud Hens would take back the lead in the sixth when Lipcius led off with a walk. With one out Westbrook reached on catcher's interference. Chris Rabago's RBI single to center cut the Saints lead to 7-6. An RBI double by López knotted the game at seven. The Mud Hens took the lead courtesy of a two-run double by Valente making it 9-7.
The Saints scored two more, two-out runs in the seventh. With one out, Andreoli ripped a single off the glove of the third baseman Lipcius. Nash Knight followed with a double to left-center putting runners at second and third. With two outs, Shuffield drilled a two-run double to right tying the game at nine.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. (CT). The Saints send Major League rehabber RHP Bailey Ober (0-1, 7.20) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Elvin Rodriguez (6-4, 4.41). The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
