Des Moines falls to Fargo
March 11, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Des Moines outshot Fargo 42-24 in the game but both of Fargo's goaltenders combined for 42 saves and snuck by the Buccaneers by a 1-0 score.
The Des Moines Buccaneers kept Fargo goaltender Ryan Wischow busy in the first period despite the fact that the Force had 3 power play opportunities to the Buccaneers' one. Zach Jordan had two of the best scoring chances for either side, one shorthanded and one where he backhanded his own rebound with Wischow down but not out. Wischow made 16 saves in the first period while Nick MacNab stopped all 10 shots he saw.
Fargo finally broke the stalemate on their fourth power play chance of the evening; Denis Smirnov took the puck from the right circle and Grant Meyer redirected the puck on target and it slowly trickled in to MacNab's right at 4:37 of the second period. Des Moines again had several Grade A chances including some MidAmerican Energy power play looks to end the period, but this time it was Robbie Beydoun, relieving Wischow in action to start the second period, who kept the Buccaneers off the scoreboard. The Buccaneers ended the 2nd period still with 50 seconds left of a man advantage. Des Moines again won the shots on goal statistic in the second period, outshooting Fargo 15-8 in the middle frame.
For a third straight period the Buccaneers outshot Fargo, this time by at 11-6 margin, and again Fargo's outstanding goaltending kept Des Moines off the scoreboard. Des Moines had the final four power play chances of the game and the only two of the third period, including one with 3:01 left in regulation, and with MacNab pulled they had some 6 on 4 chances but Beydoun shut the door. Beydoun finished the game with 26 saves in the win, Wischow had 16 in the first period and Nick MacNab made 23 saves on 24 shots on goal.
The Buccaneers next face the Fargo Force again at Scheels Arena on Saturday, March 12th.
