Moise's First as Capitol Seals Win over Stampede

Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (21-23-4-3) got a tie-breaking goal from one of their newest sources as they defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede (23-23-3-1) on Friday night by a final score of 2-1 on Cross Check Cancer Night with the UW Carbone Cancer Center.

The first period began hesitantly for the two clubs that had not met since October of 2014. After generating the game's first seven shots, the Capitols then had to fend off a Sioux Falls power play late in the first frame, before Sioux Falls answered with a successful penalty kill of its own.

The Capitols' best chance of the opening period came shorthanded, as Alex Payusov fed Alex Robert in a two-on-one rush, but the defenseman missed the net on a snap shot effort.

Ryan Edquist held down the fort for the Capitols through a busy second half of the first period. After Sioux Falls did not register a shot until past the 10:00 mark, the Stampede rattled off 12 shots in the period, and Edquist had each answer. At the other end, Ales Stezka stopped 10 for Sioux Falls.

The early stages of the second period saw both teams crack their goose egg. First, it was Capitols' leading scorer Marcel Godbout who broke the scoreless tie at 1:01 of the period. After Payusov fished the puck toward the slot area, the biscuit sat just outside the blue paint, and Godbout beat his man to the disc, softly chipping it through Stezka to put Madison on top, 1-0.

After Godbout's 19th of the season, though, the Stampede answered in a hurry. At 4:10, operating on the squad's second power play, Jack Suter beat Edquist off the rush on the right wing side, beating the goalie on the blocker hand to tie the score, 1-1.

Each goalie, though, made up for their mistakes to keep the score tied. First, Edquist made a sprawling denial on Dan Warpecha on a breakaway bid midway through the period. Not to be outdone, Stezka came up with a desperation stop on Dmitri Buinitsky in the period's final minute. After Buinitsky powered his way around the net with a man on his back, he worked the puck in front, turning a sprawling backhander on the net. However, the 6-foot-4 Stezka got just a wide-enough stretch with the leg pad to keep the score deadlocked heading into the third.

The Capitols put the foot down on the throttle in the third to complete their fourth straight victory inside the Coliseum. Newcomer Marshall Moise played the role of hero at the 9:09 mark of the third period. Guillaume Leclerc criss-crossed with Robert off the rush, then dropped the puck to Moise, who powered a wrist shot that trickled under the arm of Stezka and into the twine for the game-winning marker.

At the other end, Edquist had the replies on each of Sioux Falls' nine third-period shot attempts. He finished the night with 31 saves for his seventh win of the year. Stezka had 30 stops in the loss for Sioux Falls.

The Capitols look for a second straight win on Saturday as they host Youngstown, and the night brings about the return of four-legged friends to the Coliseum on Pucks N' Paws night, presented by Animart. Dogs will be permitted into the Alliant Energy Center on game night, and the first 100 pups will receive a specialty doggy goody bag!
