Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Madison, WI - The Sioux Falls Stampede couldn't get their offense clicking Friday night and it led to a 2-1 loss to the Madison Capitols at the Alliant Energy Center. The loss dropped the Herd's record to 23-23-4 on the season and into fifth place in the Western Conference, two points behind Fargo for fourth after the Force topped Des Moines. Jack Suter tallied the lone goal for the Herd while Ales Stezka turned in a solid performance, stopping 30 of 32 shots in the game.
After a scoreless first period, the Capitols gained the first goal of the game just 1:01 into the second period when Marcel Godbout tallied his 19th goal of the season. Alexandre Payusov got the first shot on net that was stopped by Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka, but the rebound bounced into the slot and with several players diving towards the puck, Godbout was able to wrist a shot that went under the right arm of Stezka and into the net. The Herd would respond at 4:10 of the period when Jack Suter scored on the power play. Joe Rutkowski sent a pass up the right wing side which Suter took and skated into the right circle before wristing a perfect shot past the stick side of Madison goaltender Ryan Edquist to tie the game 1-1. Both teams had some good chances later in the period, but Edquist made some nice stops and Stezka was stellar between the pipes, shutting down the Madison offense.
The game would remain tied until the 9:09 mark when Madison would take the lead again and this time for good. Guilaume Lecierc sent a pass to the edge of the right circle to Marshall Moise who wristed a shot that was slowed by the glove side of Stezka, but bounced into the back of the net to give Madison a 2-1 lead. The Herd lacked the offensive push they needed in the final ten minutes to try and tie the game up, but still trailed by just a goal heading into the final 90 seconds. The Stampede were able to pull Stezka in the final seconds, but couldn't get the tying goal and fell 2-1.
Madison outshot the Herd 10-9 in the final period and both teams finished with 32 shots on goal. The Stampede finished 1-for-3 on the power play while Madison was 0-for-2.
The Herd will look to bounce back into the win column on Saturday when they travel to Waterloo to face the Black Hawks at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch all the action live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting at 6:40 PM. The game will also be available on FASTHockey.com.
