Kane County Cougars News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The Kane County Cougars' defense committed three errors in the first two innings behind Tayler Scott leading to five unearned runs in a 9-1, series-opening loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
With two runners on and one out in the Whitecaps (11-11, 44-48) bottom of the first inning, Marco Hernandez booted a groundball to load the bases. Connor Harrell drove in the first run with a sac fly and Lance Durham lashed a two-RBI single.
In the second inning, Hernandez made his second error of the game to allow the leadoff hitter, David Gonzalez, to reach against Scott. Jeff Holm plated Gonzalez on an RBI fielder's choice before Jason King lofted a ball to right field that scored Danry Vasquez.
The Cougars' (4,-17, 34-53) lone run came in the top of the first inning when Dan Vogelbach smoked a laser over the right field wall for a solo home run. The Whitecaps pitching staff shut the Cougars down from there. Starter Jake Thompson worked four innings and allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out seven.
Calvin Drummond (W, 1-1) tossed three hitless and shutout innings out of the bullpen for the Whitecaps. He walked one and struck out two.
Cougars' starter Tyler Scott (L, 4-5) was pegged with six runs on eight hits over four innings. Only one run was earned. Sheldon McDonald worked a perfect frame out of the bullpen for the Cougars. Armado Rivero tossed 1.2 innings and allowed one run before exiting in the seventh inning responsible for two base runners. Stephen Perkaslis would allow them both to score when Jared Reaves lashed a two RBI double to give the Whitecaps a comfortable 9-1 lead.
The Cougars continue a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon from Fifth Third Ballpark at 12:00 central time. Big league rehabber Scott Baker (0-0) will make his first MiLB appearance with the Cougars. Righty Endrys Briceno (4-6) will start for West Michigan. The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday, July 17, to take on the Great Lakes Loons at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
