CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Six strong innings from starter Tim Atherton and a pair of solo home runs in the 5th vaulted the Kernels to a 6-3 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Saturday night.

The Kernels rattled Bowling Green starting pitcher Jeff Ames early on in the contest. Ames, who entered the game with a 24 inning scoreless streak, allowed two runs on three hits in the 1st as eight batters came to the plate.

With two outs in the frame, Adam Brett Walker doubled into the left field corner to score Jorge Polanco, who singled. Max Kepler followed with an RBI single to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.

Jeremias Pineda led off the 2nd with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dalton Hicks. That gave the Kernels a 3-0 lead and signaled the end of the day for Ames, who didn't come back out for the 3rd. Prior to Saturday, Ames last allowed a run on June 3.

Andrew Toles's RBI single scored Marty Gantt to put Bowling Green on the board in the 5th, 3-1.

Two solo home runs in the 5th pushed the advantage for the Kernels to 5-1. Walker powered one over the left center field wall and onto 8th Avenue for his 16th long ball of the season, which leads the Midwest League. Walker has now hit a home run in three straight games. Two batters later, Tyler Grimes lined one off the wall in left, with the ball rocketing several feet over to left center. Grimes sped around the bases for an inside the park home run.

The Hot Rods pushed across two runs in the top of the 8th. Toles led off with a solo home run and Thomas Coyle later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Martin, which decreased the Hot Rods' deficit to 5-3.

Grimes led off the bottom half of the 8th with a single, but reached second on the same play with Bowling Green's infield not covering the base moments after Grimes ran safely through first. Two batters later, Joel Licon doubled home Grimes.

Kernels starter Tim Atherton went six innings, allowing just one run on two hits while walking two and striking out four. Atherton (5-2) didn't allow a hit through four. Left-hander Steve Gruver threw two innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one. Tyler Jones pitched the 9th, striking out two for his 8th save.
