Burlington Bees News Release

The Burlington Bees took advantage of six errors by the Lansing Lugnuts to win 11-5 and take the first game of the three-game series at Cooley Law School Stadium on Saturday night.

It was a game that set baseball back to the 1800s, but for Burlington (34-53, 8-14), it was a victory that brought the Bees their third straight win.

The ugly play began in the second inning when the Bees scored two unearned runs off Lugnuts starter, Daniel Norris. Norris (0-5) allowed back-to-back singles to Wade Hinkle and Anthony Bemboom to start the inning. Chance Ross sent a line drive back to Norris that was dropped and called an error. The bases were loaded for Chevy Clarke and he grounded a ball to third that was misplayed by Jason Leblebijian and scored two runs.

Lansing (37-54, 5-17) tried to make some noise in the third against Tyler DeLoach (3-2), but the southpaw worked out of some major trouble. Carlos Ramirez doubled and Jorge Flores walked to put two men on with nobody out. Dalton Pompey sacrificed the two into scoring position. Emilio Guerrero walked and during Dwight Smith Jr.'s at-bat, a passed ball allowed Ramirez to score the first Lugnuts run. Smith Jr. walked and Christian Lopez grounded into an inning-ending double play. DeLoach twirled five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, to pick up his third victory.

The Bees made the Lugnuts pay in the fifth, scoring four runs, only one of which was earned. Wendell Soto walked, Sherman Johnson reached on an error by Kevin Patterson and Garrett Cannizaro and Andrew Ray followed with singles. Ray's single turned into a little league home run, because the catcher tried to get Cannizaro going to third on the throw home and sailed the ball into left field. Nobody was backing up the play, which allowed both Cannizaro and Ray to score.

Burlington added three in the eighth and two in the ninth to pull away and embarass the Lugnuts. Offensively, Johnson had two RBIs on a triple, while Exicardo Cayones had two sacrifice flies. Bemboom had a fantastic night, going 2-for-4 with three runs.

On Sunday, the Bees will try to tie a season-high four-game winning streak when Ryan Crowley takes the mound. The Lugnuts have not announced their starter for the game set to begin at 2:05 eastern time.
