Peoria Chiefs News Release

Midland, MI- The Peoria Chiefs walked a season-high nine batters and did not get a runner past second base all night in a 5-0 series-opening loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 10-12 on the half and 48-41 overall.

Starting pitchers Silfredo Garcia and Miguel Sulbaran both pitched around leadoff walks in the first inning and the game was scoreless into the fifth. Great Lakes got a leadoff double in the fifth from Jose Capellan and a walk to Robbie Garvey put two on base. Garcia induced a double play with Capellan moving to third but his next pitch skipped by Gerwuins Velazco as Great Lakes took a 1-0 lead.

A startling call in the sixth extended the Loons lead. With one down, Brandon Dixon tripled off Michael Aldrete and the Chiefs intentionally walked James Baldwin III. Jeremy Rathjen attempted a squeeze bunt and fouled the pitch back. But home plate umpire Jimmy Lott ruled it a wild pitch as Dixon scored and Baldwin moved to third. Chiefs manager Dann Bilardello was ejected after arguing the play with both umpires.

Great Lakes put the game away in the seventh against the Chiefs bullpen. Garvey tripled to start the inning and two walks with one out loaded the bases. Brady Adamek took over for Aldrete and a walk to Andrew Miller forced home a run. Another walk and two wild pitches put Great Lakes up 5-0 before Nick Martini threw out Miller at the plate on a 9-2 double play to end the inning.

The Chiefs finished the game with just three hits and three walks. Jeremy Schaffer had two of the three hits with a lead-off single in the fourth and a one-out double in the sixth. Charlie Tilson had an infield single with two outs in the second and Martini drew two of the three walks.

Garcia (2-2) allowed four hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings with four walks, four strikeouts and a wild pitch. Aldrete was charged with four runs on two hits and three walks over 1 2/3 innings. He threw a wild pitch and struck out two. Adamek walked two batter and threw two wild pitches in 2/3 of an inning. Joe Donofrio threw a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.
