Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - In a game that featured eight total errors, the Lansing Lugnuts (5-17, 37-54) committed a season-high six miscues, resulting in an 11-5 loss to the Burlington Bees (8-14, 34-53) before a Saturday night of 8,891 at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The errors - two by third baseman Jason Leblebijian and one each by pitchers Daniel Norris and Efrain Nieves, right fielder Carlos Ramirez and first baseman Kevin Patterson - led to seven unearned runs and a season-high 11-run output for Burlington.
The Bees took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to two errors by the Lugnuts and extended it in the top of the fifth inning with four runs thanks to a slew of Lansing miscues on the diamond.
After a Garrett Cannizaro RBI single stretched Burlington's lead to 3-1, Andrew Ray followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Sherman Johnson from second to put the Bees up 4-1. Dwight Smith, Jr.'s throw from left then got beyond catcher Santiago Nessy and all the way to the backstop. Lugs reliever Efrain Nieves picked the ball up in foul ground and attempted to throw out Cannizaro at third but his throw was wild and rolled all the way to the left field wall, allowing both Cannizaro and Ray to come around to score to make it 6-1 in favor of the Bees.
The Bees added three more in the eighth inning - two of them unearned - after Jason Leblebijian's throw from third pulled Kevin Patterson off the bag at first for Lansing's season-high fifth error on the night, a two-run triple from Johnson capped the Burlington scoring in the frame.
An errant throw from Carlos Ramirez in the ninth was the sixth and final error for Lansing in the game.
Burlington had some sloppy defense of its own, handing the Lugnuts a pair of runs in the fifth inning thanks to back-to-back fielding errors from Bees first baseman Wade Hinkle.
In the loss, Christian Lopes was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lugs, including an RBI single in the fifth innings after one of Hinkle's errors. Emilio Guerrero also contributed with an RBI single in the eighth, extending his on-base streak to eight games.
Starter Daniel Norris (Loss, 0-5) gave up two runs - both unearned - to the Bees in four innings of work. The 20-year old allowed four hits, struck out five and did not issue a single walk in the outing. The Lugnuts bullpen pitched the next five frames, allowing nine runs on eight hits but five of those runs were unearned.
Burlington's Tyler DeLoach (Win, 3-2) worked his way through five innings, allowing three runs - one earned - on six Lansing hits. DeLoach struck out four and also issued four walks.
Game two of the three-game series is set for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch Sunday on a Kid's Day at Cooley Law School Stadium. Families can play catch on the field before the game and kids can run the bases after. Lansing has yet to announce a starter while the Bees will give the ball to southpaw Ryan Crowley (7-3, 3.41).
