Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - Andrew Toles hit his second home run of the season in a 6-3 loss for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-8, 53-38) against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (15-7, 55-35) at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Toles' first blast since April capped a performance that included two hits and two runs batted in. Marty Gantt also had a multi-hit effort, including a double.
Jeff Ames' scoreless inning streak was stopped at a team-record 24 innings due to a quick start by the Kernels. Cedar Rapids fouled off several pitches and capitalized on long at bats for two runs in the first inning. The Kernels added another run in the second for a 3-0 lead. Ames, who threw 59 pitches in those two innings, was followed by Stone Speer and Marcus Jensen to finish the game.
Bowling Green broke up a no-hitter and shutout bid for Tim Atherton in the fifth inning. Gantt doubled to open the frame and later scored on a base hit from Toles. The Kernels answered with two homers in the bottom of the inning. Adam Brett Walker cleared the left field wall on a one-out solo shot. Two batters later, Tyler Grimes lined the ball over Gantt's leap and recorded an inside-the-park home run when the ball rolled along the warning track in left-center field, making the lead 5-1.
Each team scored again in the eighth to reach the final margin. Toles homered off former Tennessee teammate Steve Gruver to being the inning. Brandon Martin's sacrifice fly scored Tommy Coyle and cut the difference to 5-3. Cedar Rapids had another response to Bowling Green as Grimes scored on a double from Joel Licon. Tyler Jones followed with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his eighth save.
The next game between the Hot Rods and Kernels will occur on Sunday at 2:05 PM CDT. Bowling Green LHP Jordan Harrison (1-1, 2.70) is scheduled to start against Cedar Rapids LHP Mason Melotakis (6-3, 3.89). Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will be on the call starting at 1:35 PM CDT on the Forever Communications Pregame Show on the Hot Rods Radio Network (1340 "The Ticket" WBGN-AM, 1340wbgn.com, and on the TuneIn Radio website and app).
