LumberKings Cut Down Hawks 5-4

July 13, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Third baseman Jordy Lara hit a tiebreaking single to left field as the Clinton LumberKings plated three runs in the seventh en route to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks. Left fielder Jabari Henry led the offense for the LumberKings with two hits, including a two-run double in the first inning. The Silver Hawks could not get out of their own way in this game as they made four outs on the basepaths allowing Clinton starter Scott DeCecco out of danger in several innings.

Clinton (44-47, 10-12) jumped all over Silver Hawks starting pitcher Brad Allen (4-5) in the first inning. Shortstop Ketel Marte led off the game by beating out an infield single to the first baseman. He stole second before second baseman Jamodrick McGruder was hit by a pitch. A groundout to second base advanced both runners putting men at second and third with just one out. Left fielder Jabari Henry then worked a nine-pitch at bat that led to a double that hit high off of the left field fence, scoring both runners and giving the LumberKings the early 2-0 lead.

South Bend (58-34, 14-9) got one run buck in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Fidel Pena lined a single to center to lead off the inning. Center fielder Breland Almadova laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Pena to second base. Right fielder Socrates Brito grounded a single through the left side that put runners at the corners with one out. Designated hitter Brandon Drury drove home Pena with an infield single to second. Brito beat the throw to second base after a diving stop by the LumberKings second baseman but wandered off the base and was tagged out by the shortstop for the second out of the inning. This proved costly for the Hawks as first baseman Rudy Flores was up next and laced a double off of the second baseman's glove that would have scored a run. Instead, there were runners on second and third and Clinton starter Scott DeCecco (7-6) got a fly ball to centerfield to end the inning.

The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Carter Bell led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. Left fielder Alex Glenn followed with a double down the right field line that scored Bell and tied the game at 2-2. After a ground ball advanced Glenn to third, Pena hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Glenn and give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. South Bend, the Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, added on to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Brito led off with a triple off of the center field wall. Two batters later, Flores lined a single to center to score Brito and extended the Hawks lead to 4-2.

Allen settled down after the first inning as after the Henry double, he retired the next seventeen batters he faced, including striking out the side in the fifth inning. He was unable to hang on for the victory however, as he coughed up the lead in the seventh inning. Henry broke Allen's consecutive batters retired streak with a hard single to left field to lead off the inning. Catcher Tyler Marlette followed with a ground ball single up the middle that advanced Henry to second base. After a visit from the pitching coach, the tiring Allen retired first baseman Taylor Ard on a fly ball to right field for the first out of the inning. Right fielder Gaby Guerrero lined a single to right field that scored Henry while Marlette also came around to score on the play due to a throwing error by Brito. That tied the game at 4-4. Third baseman Jordy Lara broke the tie with a single to left field that scored Guerrero from second base and gave Clinton, the Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the 5-4 lead.

Clinton's bullpen closed out the game for the LumberKings in the last two innings in relief of DeCecco. Richard Vargas pitched the eighth inning and after allowing a leadoff single, struck out the side. David Holman (S, 3) finished the game off with a perfect ninth inning for the save.

The Hawks and LumberKings continue their three-game series on Sunday with a matinee starting at 2:05pm. Tyler Pike (5-3, 2.39 ERA) will start the game for the LumberKings while Daniel Watts (10-3, 3.38 ERA) takes the hill for the Silver Hawks. It's Family Day at Coveleski Regional Stadium with a pre-game catch on the field and a post-game autograph session with Silver Hawks players. There is also a Replica Jersey Giveaway for kids as the first 500 kids 12 & under will receive a replica jersey.
