Dayton Wins 4-2 Despite Terrific 37 Effort

February 14, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Bryan "Boomer" Ewing returned to the Wheeling Nailers after his week-long call-up to the AHL and scored his 31st and 32nd goals of the year just 9 seconds apart in the 1st period but the Nailers a tough one on the road to the Dayton Bombers 4-2. The Saturday night game was played at the Bombers alternative home at historic Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio about 20 miles north of Dayton.

Ewing gave the Nailers a 2-0 lead in the 1st period with his tallies. His first came on the power play at 15:11 on a big blast from around the left dot assisted by Doug Krantz and Brock Sheahan. Ewing didn't sit on the 31 goal mark for long though as Erik Johnson won it away along the end-boards and chipped it back to a wide-open Ewing to stuff it in off the stick of the diving Bombers goalie David Shantz. Wheeling's goals 9 seconds apart are their fastest goals of the season.

Wheeling led 2-0 at the 1st intermission as Jordan Alford turned aside all 18 Dayton shots he faced.

Ewing is 3rd in the ECHL in goals with 32 trailing only Wes Goldie of Victoria and Kevin Baker of Florida. He is 2nd in the league in points with 63 trailing only Baker. Ewing is a rookie out of Boston University who is the first ever West Viriginia native to play professional hockey. The Wheeling native had a 7 game goal streak in January.

The Bombers comeback began in the 2nd period with goals by Ryan Smith at 5:39 and Nino Musitelli at 15:33 to tie it after 2.

Dan Riedel scored his team-leading 19th goal of the year for the game-winner on a rebound and scramble in the crease as he stuffed it in past Alford's right leg to give the Bombers a 3-2 lead.

Coach Greg Puhalski opted to pull goalie Alford with 1:48 remaining for the extra attacker to try to tie the score. Despite several great chances including efforts by Ewing and Aaron Clarke and some close-calls the Bombers were able to withstand the storm. Nino Musitelli raced out of there with the puck in the closing moments and finished the win with an empty-netter with just 3.4 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.

Wheeling went 1 for 2 on the power play while Dayton was 1 for 3. Dayton outshot the Nailers 41-23 on the contest. Jordan Alford (0-2-0) made saves on 37 of the 40 shots he faced in a fine performance in just his 2nd game in a Wheeling jersey.

This was Wheeling's last game at Dayton this season. Dayton leads the season series 6 games to 5 with 3 more regular season encounters between the two teams scheduled for WesBanco Arena in Wheeling. The next Nailers vs. Bombers encounter is also the Nailers next home game on Friday, February 27th.
