February 14, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Anchorage, AK - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met in the second game of a four-game set that pits the two teams atop the standings in the National Conference. Victoria started Julien Ellis in net while Alaska countered with J.P. Lamoureaux.
The Aces took the play to the Salmon Kings in the first period, but were unable to count a goal versus Kings' netminder Julien Ellis. The Victoria goalie made 17 saves, while the Aces' Lamoureaux made four. The game was scoreless through 20 minutes.
The Salmon Kings were much more aggressive in the second frame, but the Aces were the only team able to get on the scoreboard. Colin Hemingway dumped the puck into the left wing corner and Alexandre Imbeault picked it up and fired a shot short side. He was able to squeeze the puck past Ellis to make it a 1-0 game. The Aces' would take that lead to the locker room after the second period.
The Salmon Kings would tie the game at 1-1 when Wes Goldie would score his 39th goal of the year. Goldie took a headman pass from Chris St. Jacques and went in on a breakaway. The Kings' captain fought of the back check of Aces' defender Derek Martin and snapped a shot over the blocker shoulder of Lamoureaux to tie the game. Victoria would complete the comeback when Wes Goldie would breakout down the left wing. At the Aces blue line he passed the puck to himself off the half-wall. Goldie flew after the puck and threw a centering pass for Darryl Lloyd. The puck careened of Lloyd's skate and past Lamoureaux to give the Salmon Kings a one goal lead. From that point on Ellis would make a handful of glorious saves to keep the Aces at bay. Salmon Kings 2 Aces 1.
Victoria finished 0/2=0.0% on the power play, while Alaska finished 0/2=0.0%. The Aces out shot the Salmon Kings 32-23.
The Salmon Kings and Aces continue their four-game set tomorrow night at 8:15 p.m. PST. The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 11th to open a four-game set against the Ontario Reign. For tickets call 220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
