Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs won their third straight game thanks to a strong special teams effort against Trenton on Saturday night. The Chiefs cashed in twice on the power play, including the game winner, and denied each of the Devils' four man-advantage chances to take a 3-2 victory.

Johnstown's record stands at 29-18-2, and with 60 points the Chiefs leaped over Elmira into second place one point behind the division leading Cincinnati Cyclones.

With 19 combined shots in the first period, Johnstown good for 10 of those 19, both teams headed to the locker room scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play.

As both teams were eager to get on the board, hard-hitting, physical play was the theme of the second period. With 5:11 left in the second, Trenton's Ryan Gunderson set his team up with a blue line shot that was deflected into the net by Jeff Prough. That goal was answered by Jarrett Konkle at 16:28 as he buried his own rebound set up by Toby LaFrance and Andrew Sarauer for a power play goal. With time diminishing in the period Todd Griffith forced his own rebound past goalie Gerald Coleman with only 33 seconds remaining, giving the Chiefs a 2-1 advantage. Kyle Bushee sprang Griffith, just out of the penalty box, with a long homerun pass that led to the goal.

At 11:15 in the third, Trenton's David Leaderer tied the game with a blue-line slap shot through traffic. With overtime in the picture Johnstown's Konkle set up a power play goal that ended the game in regulation. Toby LaFrance came open in the slot, and Konkle was able to slide a pass to him out of the right-wing corner. Greg Gallagher added an assist as well.

Keserich's 32-save effort earned his 10th win of the season while the Chiefs' power play went 2-for-6.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Sunday, February 15th, against the Wheeling Nailers. The game will be preceded by a ceremony honoring a local hockey great, Reg Kent, a former Johnstown Jet who will have his jersey retired at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink. Good seats are available, but going quickly! Act fast and be sure to get your seat by calling 814-539-1799 or 814-536-5156.
