Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones exploded for four third period goals, but it was not enough in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Dayton Bombers on Saturday night. T.J. McElroy and Mark Santorelli each had a goal and an assist in the defeat.
The Cyclones dominated play in the opening period, outshooting Dayton, 17-6, and having three power play chances that were unconverted. Dayton scored the only goal of the frame, as Mike McLean tallied his tenth of the season coming up the right wing side at 19:36.
Dayton extended its lead to 2-0 with another goal in the final half minute of a period. This time, Dominic D'Amour netted his fifth goal of the campaign with 6.6 seconds remaining. D'Amour has scored four of his five goals this season at the expense of the Cyclones. The goals marked the seventh and eighth times this season that Cincinnati has surrendered a goal in the final minute of a period. The Cyclones again outshot Dayton, 10-8, in the stanza.
Cincinnati scored four straight goals to wipe out the two goal deficit and build a two goal cushion at 4-2. Barret Ehgoetz netted his ninth goal at 9:30 on the power play. Ben Gordon collected his fifth of the campaign at 12:09 to tie the game. T.J. McElroy slammed home his fifth goal on the power play at 13:45 and Mark Santorelli slipped in his first ECHL goal at 14:51.
The bad news was the Dayton had 5:09 to tie the game-and it did. Greg Labenski picked up his fifth goal on the power play at 16:45 and then with the goaltender pulled, McLean got his second of the night and eleventh of the year at 19:14-the third straight frame that the Bombers scored a final minute goal.
In overtime, neither team could end the contest and Cincinnati finished the game with a season-high 51 shots on goal, while Dayton was limited to 23. The Cyclones converted three man-advantage goals in eleven chanes, while Dayton was two for seven with the power play.
In the shootout, Jimmy Kilpatrick scored in the fifth round for the Cyclones. Justin Bowers netted a shootout score in the first frame for Dayton and Dan LaPointe ended the contest with his shootout marker.
The Cyclones are now 12-11-5 on the season, while Dayton is 16-9-3. The teams have the next few days off for the holidays and will square off against one another on Friday, December 26 at 7:30pm at the Nutter Center.
