Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Saturday night match-up the Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met in the final game of a three-game set. Goaltender Todd Ford started in net for the Kings while the Aces countered with Jean-Phillipe Lamoureux.
For the first time in this series, Alaska opened the scoring at 2:16 of the first period. Vladimir Novak received a pass from Lance Galbraith out of the corner off of a giveaway and snapped home his fifth of the year. Victoria responded and squared the score up when Shaun Landolt collected his eighth of the year at the 6:49 mark. Minutes later Dylan Yeo fed Wes Goldie in the slot for a one-timer that beat Lamoureux. Victoria was up 2-1 after the first period of play.
After applying pressure to start the second period Alaska's Erik Fabian slid one past Ford. The Aces didn't stop, the Kings had trouble clearing the zone which lead to Bryan Miller walking in from along the boards to beat Ford with a wrist shot. After being hooked and clutched on a breakaway, Chris St. Jacques was awarded a penalty shot. The Victoria forward came down the right side and faked a shot and went with the backhand top shelf. After 40 minutes the game was tied at 3-3.
Victoria regained the lead just 1:34 into the third when Patrick Coulombe buried his first of the season when a pass attempt was deflected through Lamoureux legs. Wes Goldie added an empty netter for the insurance goal. Salmon Kings 5 Aces 3.
With the win the Salmon Kings move into a first place tie atop the ECHL standings with 40 points. This is the first time that Victoria has held this distinction. It also marks the first time the Salmon Kings have swept the Aces.
Victoria finished 1/9 = 11% on the power play, while Alaska finished 0-4 = 0%. Final shots were 46-28 for the Salmon Kings.
The Salmon Kings take Christmas off before starting a three game road trip in Stockton on the 27th. The team returns to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in the New Year when Bakersfield comes to town for a three game set beginning January 2nd at 7:05 p.m. Call 250-220-7777 for tickets.
