Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (16-11-2) scored three times in the first period and never trailed tonight against the Bakersfield Condors (9-14-4) en route to a 5-2 win in front of 3,730 fans at Qwest Arena.
Last night's Aquafina top star, Bakersfield goalie Yutaka Fukufuji, stopped only nine of 12 shots before coach Marty Raymond pulled him from the Condors' net in favor of Ryan Nie. Opening the scoring for the Steelheads was Tyler Shelast with an unassisted goal at 4:15; he returned to the Idaho lineup after being reassigned by Dallas (NHL) from Hamilton (AHL) prior to last night's tilt. Matt McKnight scored to make it 2-0 at 13:25 of the period, with an assist going to Shelast. Bryan McGregor capped off the three-goal first period when his pass to the front of the net took a Steelheads bounce past Fukufuji for his ninth of the season at 13:38; Marty Flichel and Darrell Hay tallied assists.
Bakersfield struck first in the second with the period's only goal, pulling to within two. Matt Pope scored at 7:57, assisted by Chad Painchaud and Tyler Scott. Bakersfield also scored the first goal in the third period, as Andrew Ianiero scored his eighth, assisted by Mike Wirll and Nick Pernula at 2:57.
But from that point forward it was all Steelheads, as Garett Bembridge scored to make it 4-2, assisted by Darrell Hay and Brent Shepheard, and Ben Nelson scored his 12th, assisted by Hay and Bembridge, which made it 5-2 for Idaho.
Matt Climie won his sixth game in his last seven starts to improve to 9-5-0, as he stopped 27 of 29 Bakersfield shots. Fukufuji takes the loss, falling to 1-4-0; he gave up three goals on 12 shots before Raymond had seen enough. Ryan Nie came on in relief, stopping 24 of 26 Idaho shots.
