Salmon Kings, Ford Stifle Aces

December 20, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Victoria, BC, Canada - Todd Ford stopped all 26 Alaska shots and Sean O'Connor provided a goal and an assist as Victoria dominated throughout in a 4-0 whitewash of the Aces before 4,772 Friday at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre.

The Aces (16-10-1) have lost three games in a row for the first time all season and have been shut out twice in their last three contests. Meanwhile, the first-place Salmon Kings (18-9-2) have won seven straight games by a combined score of 31-7 to take a five-point lead in the West Divsion over Alaska, losers of eight of their last 13 tilts after a club-record 11-2-1 start. The Aces remained in second place only by virtue of Idaho's 3-1 loss at home to Bakersfield Friday.

Alaska goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux proved to be the club's lone bright spot, finishing with 39 saves, including a breakaway stop of Chris St. Jacques and two point blank denials of Scott Howes in the first period alone. St. Jacques did slip a wrist shot past Lamoureux at 6:37 of the opening frame to give Victoria a 1-0 lead, and Howes finally scored at 2:39 of the second period. Sean Landolt whistled a wrist shot underneath the crossbar less than two minutes after the goal by Howes, and the Salmon Kings took a 3-0 lead into the final period, having out-shot the Aces 35-14 in the first 40 minutes.

Alaska took 12 of the third period's 20 shots on goal, but never solved Ford, despite having a pair of six-on-four chances down the stretch, as head coach Keith McCambridge elected to pull Lamoureux and try to get on the board to give his team a spark. O'Connor's goal came off the rush on a Victoria power play with 8:46 left in regulation and ended a stretch of 36 consecutive penalty kills for the Aces. Alaska went 0-for-six on its own power play and has converted just one of 29 chances over the last five games. Wes Goldie, who came into Friday with back-to-back hat tricks, was limited to one assist for the Salmon Kings, who have gone 15-3-2 since a 3-6 start to their season.

The Aces look to salvage the series finale, their final game at Victoria during the regular season, tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage on KFQD AM 750 will start 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
