Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Kentrail Davis's two-out double down the left-field line scored Scooter Gennett all the way from first in the ninth inning as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers earned a split with a 6-5 win over the Clinton LumberKings. Davis finished 3-for-5 on the night to lead the Rattlers.
The LumberKings had their shots to win the game despite four crucial errors, all leading to Wisconsin runs. The Rattlers scored three times - twice on errors by right-fielder James Jones and catcher Blake Ochoa - to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but RBI singles from Matt Cerione and Nick Franklin and back-to-back RBI groundouts by Tim Morris and Vinnie Catricala put Clinton ahead, 4-3.
James Jones singled home Mario Martinez in the fourth to extend his RBI streak to eight games and his hitting streak to nine games, but the 5-3 lead would be the high point of the game for the Kings.
Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez nearly induced an inning-ending double-play in the fifth, but an errant throw from Franklin scored Gennett to cut the lead to 5-4. Ramirez would exit after five innings, allowing four runs - one earned - on seven hits while striking out four.
Right-hander Stephen Pryor gave up a leadoff double to Chris Dennis in the sixth, and miscommunication on a pickoff play sent Pryor's throw into center and Dennis to third. Still, Pryor (BS, 1) nearly got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts, but a wild pitch to the backstop scored Dennis for the tying run.
The game stayed tied at 5-5 until right-hander Fray Martinez served up the double to Davis on a 3-2 pitch with Gennett taking off. Left-fielder Vinnie Catricala couldn't get the throw in to the diamond in time as Gennett scored for the 6-5 lead.
Left-hander Jon Pokorny (S, 12) walked Gabriel Noriega to lead off the bottom of the ninth but would then get three outs. Morris struck out swinging with the tying run on at first base to end the game.
The win went to left-hander Matt Costello (W, 2-3), who tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Martinez (L, 0-1) fell with a run on two hits over 2.0 innings.
Noriega went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the losing effort for the LumberKings, who remain 1.5 games ahead of Beloit for the West Division Wild Card. Clinton has lost back-to-back games after reeling off seven-straight wins.
The LumberKings (23-20) open a three-game series against the Burlington Bees (15-26) tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Right-hander Yoervis Medina (1-0, 6.00) makes his second start with Clinton tomorrow. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
