
Former Red Wings Great Mickey Redmond to Make Appearance at Whitecaps Game

COMSTOCK PARK, MI -- Former Detroit Red Wings star Mickey Redmond will visit Fifth Third Ballpark on Sunday, August 29 for the Whitecaps game against the Great Lakes Loons. Redmond, who is currently a color analyst on FS Detroit for the Red Wings, will throw out the first pitch and sign autographs for fans.
Redmond played right wing for the Montreal Canadiens from 1967 to 1971, winning Stanley Cup championships in 1968 and 1969. He was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 1971 and played there from 1971 to 1976. During the 1972-73 season, Redmond become only the seventh player in NHL history to score more than 50 goals in one season, finishing wth 52 goals and surpassing Gordie Howe's team record. The following year he became only the third player in history to achieve back-to-back 50-goal seasons when he scored 51. He was named to the NHL All-Star team in 1973 and 1974. Redmond sustained a back injury during the 1974-1975 season and in 1976 retired early at the age of 28 due to lingering back issues.
The Sunday, August 29 game begins at 1:00 p.m. with gates opening at noon. Redmond will wrist-shot the first pitch and then sign autographs for fans from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sundays are also Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day: the first 1,000 kids eat free, there is a pre-game autograph session with the Whitecaps team on the field, families can play catch on the field before the game, and kids can run the bases after the game.
The Whitecaps have paired up with the Grand Rapids Griffins to offer a "Slapshot" of a ticket deal. Fans may purchase four reserved seat tickets to the Whitecaps August 29 game and four upper level flex tickets to any 2010-2011 season Grand Rapids Griffins game for one low price of $76...that's a $20 discount over regular prices! Ticket prices are $13.00 for premium box seats, $11.00 for box seats, $9.50 for reserved seats including the Alpine Collision Center Family Section, and $5.00 for McCain Foods Lawn seating. Children 2 and under are free. Gates for most games open one hour before gametime; gates for Friday games open one hour and 15 minutes before gametime.
