Dayton, Ohio-Michael Rockett collected three hits including two doubles to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 9-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The win was the Whitecaps sixth straight and gave them a sweep of the four-game series.
Rockett also drove in two runs for West Michigan while Jeff Rowland and Corey Jones also had three hits, giving the Whitecaps nine hits from the top three hitters in their batting order.
West Michigan starting pitcher Jared Wesson (5-1) earned the win, going five innings and allowing three hits and one run with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Whitecaps built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings against Dragons starter Ricky Bowen (2-7). The Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the second when Ryan LaMarre doubled to start the inning and eventually scored on Kevyn Feiner's ground out to make it 3-1.
But West Michigan responded with three runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Dayton's Chase Weems delivered an RBI double in the sixth but the Dragons had just one hit over the final seven innings of the game.
Bowen suffered the loss, working four and two-thirds innings, allowing 13 hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.
Dragons reliever Doug Salinas gave the club a solid outing. He worked three and one-third scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
The Dragons finished with four hits by four different players. LaMarre's double extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games.
The Dragons (10-33) host the Lansing Lugnuts (21-23) in the start to a three-game series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Jacob Johnson (6-6, 4.08) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Egan Smith (4-2, 4.58).
The Famous Chicken will entertain fans at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday with his only visit to Dayton in 2010.
