August 10, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Peoria Chiefs fell behind early on Monday and were never able to fully recover, losing to the Quad Cities River Bandits buy the score of 6-4. The loss drops the Chiefs to 20-21 on the second half of the season and 58-51 overall.
The River Bandits grabbed the lead very early in the first off starter Frank Batista. On only the second pitch of the game Quad Cities leadoff batter Luis Mateo crushed a home run over the fence in left field for an early 1-0 Bandits lead.
Quad Cities added to their lead in the second inning. Following a prolonged at-bat, Frederick Parejo walked and stole second base. Ted Obregon hit a bloop single to right field that landed between three Chiefs players to score Parejo and make it 2-0.
The River Bandits lead grew again in the fourth inning. Edgar Lara walked and advanced to third on an Obregon single. Mateo singled to score Lara and keep runners on the corners for Colin Walsh, who singled home Obregon and put Mateo on third. A Devin Goodwin single drove in one more run for a 5-0 Quad Cities lead.
The Chiefs finally got on the board in the fourth off starter Jorge Rondon. Jae-Hoon Ha extended his hitting streak to 12, the best for any Chiefs player this season, with a single and advanced to third on a Nelson Perez double. Anthony Giansanti singled to center to score both runners and cut the River Bandits lead to 5-2.
The Chiefs got another run back in the fifth. Matt Cerda singled and advanced to second on a DJ Fitzgerald single. Justin Bour was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ha singled to left to bring in Cerda and keep the bases loaded. Quad Cities then brought in reliever Dan Calhoun who struck out Perez and got Luis Flores to fly out to center to keep the score 5-3 Bandits.
The River Bandits added a late run in the eighth off reliever Manolin De Leon. CJ Beatty singled and was replaced by pinch runner Ross Smith. Smith advanced to second on a Parejo single and went to third on a Lara fly out. Obregon grounded into a fielders' choice to score Beatty and make it a 6-3 Quad Cities lead.
The Chiefs got that run back in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Chris Notti. Perez reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a Flores infield single. On the Flores single a throwing error by Obregon allowed Perez to reach third. Giansanti singled to score Perez and make it a 6-4 game. The Chiefs had the bases loaded with one out following a Hak-Ju Lee walk but were unable to get another run across in the inning.
The Chiefs attempted a comeback in the ninth that fell just short. Bour singled to right to lead off the inning of Notti before Ha was retired on a pop out. Quad Cities then brought in Aaron Terry who got Perez to fly out to left before allowing a two-out single to Luis Flores. The Chiefs inserted Logan Watkins as a pinch-runner for Flores with Giansanti at the plate as the winning run. Terry got Giansanti to fly out to center to end the game and secure the win for Quad Cities.
Batista (2-4) pitched three and 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out four. Jeffry Antigua threw three and 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out four. De Leon pitched the final two innings and surrendered one run on three hits while striking out two.
