Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Brett Nommensen tripled twice and drove in a career-high five runs for the Hot Rods on Tuesday night, leading them to a 9-5 pasting of the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The victory salvages the finale in Fort Wayne and sets up an important playoff showdown with the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Nommensen played a key role in all three innings in which the Hot Rods scored. In the fifth in a scoreless game, the Hot Rods loaded the bases with one out. Robi Estrada stepped up and singled to left to make it a 1-0 lead. Tyler Bortnick followed with a sacrifice fly before Nommensen drove in his first run with an infield single, bumping the lead to 3-0.
After Fort Wayne re-took the lead with four runs in the sixth, Nommensen put the Hot Rods back on top in the seventh. Estrada and Bortnick drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning. Nommensen then stepped up and grounded a triple down the right field line to plate both runners for a 5-4 Hot Rods lead.
It was still 5-4 Hot Rods thanks to scoreless innings from Yorman Mayora (7th) and Jake Sullivan (8th) as the game went to the ninth. That frame started in similar fashion to the seventh as Estrada and Bortnick reached on a single and an error, once again setting up Nommensen. The outfielder smacked his second triple into the gap in left-center to drive home two more runs to push the lead up to 7-4. A Dave Wendt single and a Ty Morrison bases-loaded walk also added runs in the four-run frame to put the game out of reach for good.
Nommensen finished the game 3-5 with two triples and his career-high in RBI. He also scored a run and stole his third base of the series in the fifth inning. He raised his RBI total to the 55 on the season, three behind team-leader Ryan Wiegand with 58.
Mayora earned the win despite giving up the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth. He lasted 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts to earn his first decision in a Hot Rods uniform. Jake Sullivan pitched the final two innings, allowing an inconsequential run in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of 2010.
Kirby Yates took a no-decision for the Hot Rods, leaving the game in the sixth with a man at first base. He was charged with two runs on six hits, and left in-line for the win before Mayora lost the save. Yates struck out six and walked four on the night.
In addition to Nommensen, the Hot Rods had production up and down the order. Seven of nine players had base hits while all nine starters reached base at least once. Tomas Francisco had a career-high four hits while Wendt, activated earlier in the day, picked up his first RBI in a Hot Rods uniform.
The Hot Rods return home to begin an action-packed six-game home stand on Wednesday night against West Michigan and the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). Wednesday night is Gift-Card-O-Mania presented by Best Buy®. First pitch on Wednesday night is 6:35 PM. For a full list of promotions and tickets for the upcoming home stand, visit www.bghotrods.com.
Wednesday night's pitching match-up features LHP Aaron Dott (2-3, 4.83) against West Michigan RHP Victor Larez (6-9, 4.65). You can listen to the game with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst beginning at 6:20 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
