Cyclones Win In A Shootout, 5-4

FAIRBORN, Ohio - Cincinnati Cyclones defenseman Steve Makway scored a goal in regulation time and his goal in the shootout sealed a 5-4 win over Dayton on Saturday night. The game gives the Cyclones a two game winning streak. Kyle Gajewski stopped 49 shots in regulation time and three in the shootout to preserve the win.

The Cyclones raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, as Mitch Woods collected his first score of the campaign at 3:36 from Mark Van Guilder. The lead extended when Olivier Latendresse netted his third of the year on the power play at 7:58 from Steve Makway and Kyle Gajewski. Dayton would even the scores before the first period ended when Jarret Lukin tallied a power play goal at 16:47 and Greg Labenski netted a man-advantage goal with 10.9 seconds left in the opening frame. The Bombers led the shots on goal battle, 16-7 in the first period.

Cincinnati grabbed the lead in the second period when at 17:48, Steve Makway stepped up and let loose with a shot from the top of the left circle and snapped the shot past David Shantz. Ben McLeod wrestled the puck free in back of the net and fed a pass back to the right point where Joe Ryan swung the puck to Makway, who stepped up and scored. The shots favored the Bombers, 11-9, in the middle stanza.

Dayton scored the first two goals of the third period to grab a 4-3 lead-as Tom Zanoski scored a power play goal 1:40 into the frame and Dominick D'Amour tallied his 3:23 into the stanza. The Cyclones leveled the scores at 14:41, when Kyle Rank netted his first goal of the year from Mike Nesdill. Following a scoreless overtime, a four round shootout was needed. Thomas Beauregard, Mark Van Guilder and Makway scored the goals in the shootout for the victory.

Kyle Gajewski got the win, his first as a professional, stopping 49 shots, gaining an assist and stopping three of four shots in the shootout. David Shantz took the loss in the shootout, stopping 22 shots in regulation and one of four in the shootout.

The Cyclones are 2-3-1 on the season, while Dayton is 3-1-1. The Cyclones open a four-game homestand next week with games Tuesday and Wednesday (versus Reading) and on Friday and Saturday (versus Elmira).
