Ontario Reign News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Ontario Reign (3-2-1, 7 points), proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and the AHL Manchester Monarchs took home the overtime win, 3-2, against the Phoenix Roadrunners (3-2-1, 7 points) Friday evening at US Airways Center in front of 1,811 fans.
Reign center Jon Francisco, right wing Geoff Walker and defenseman Andrew Martens each found the back of the net on the night and goaltender Jeff Zatkoff stopped 37 of the 39 shots faced in the win.
Both teams held each other scoreless in the first 20 minutes of play and each kept the match close, scoring one goal apiece in the second and third periods. Ontario got on the board first with a power play goal by Jon Francisco, his fourth on the season, as he got one by Phoenix goaltender Craig Kowalksi at 5:39 in the second off assists by Geoff Walker and Andrew Martens. Fifteen seconds later, Reign right wing Ryan Bowness and Phoenix left wing J. McEwan engaged in fisticuffs as part of a 26 penalty minute period. Nearing the eleven-minute mark, Phoenix rallied as right wing Mitch Carefoot lit the lamp to tie the score, 1-1 as the teams headed into the third.
Right wing Geoff Walker pushed the Reign ahead, 2-1, in the third as he netted his third goal on the year and the team's second power play goal on the night, off assists from center Dusty Collins and defenseman Andrew Martens at 6:50 in the third. Phoenix tied the game, 3-3, as defenseman Rob Dmytruk slipped the puck past Zatkoff twelve seconds later. Neither team was able to pull ahead in the final minutes of the match, sending the teams into five-minutes of overtime. Andrew Martens scored his second goal on the season when he netted the game-winner at 2:19 into overtime, as the Reign went on to win the match with a final score 3-2.
Notes: Jon Francisco's goal on the night extends his point streak to 6-games (4g,4a, 7 points). Andrew Martens' goal and two assists tied Geoff Walker for the most points in game (3). Tonight's power play goals mark the fifth time in six games that the Reign have scored two power play goals in a match.
