Cyclones breeze past Aces, 6-3
March 11, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Garrett Prosofsky and Josh Harrold each enjoyed four-point nights as Cincinnati built a 5-1 lead after two periods and hung on for a 6-3 victory over Alaska Wednesday in front of 3,514 at Sullivan Arena.
Evan Cheverie, who assisted on two other goals, opened the game's scoring at 9:10 of the first period, flicking in a rebound off the stick of Harrold. Charles Linglet, who had been absent from the Aces since a call-up to Utah (AHL) February 18, tied the game at 10:20, whacking home a loose puck in front of Cyclones goalie Randy Petruk. 54 seconds later, Philip Lewandowski put Cincinnati ahead to stay by beating Alaska starter Dan Murphy on a breakaway.
Prosofsky scored the first of his two goals on the night unassisted at the 15:27 mark, and Richard Naumann's goal with 2:49 left in the period, coming on another rebound, provided the Cyclones with a comfortable 4-1 margin after 20 minutes. Coming into the game, Cincinnati had been on pace to set an ECHL record for fewest goals per game in a single season and had not scored as many as four goals in an entire game since January 30.
The Cyclones built their lead to 5-1 when Prosofsky finished off a two-on-one shorthanded with just 1:35 left in the second period. The score remained that way until the midway point of the third, when Kimbi Daniels tipped in a Jonathan Gauthier drive to end Alaska's run of futility on the power play (1-for-its-last-33) at 9:19. The Aces did not really start pressing, though, until Chris Lipsett found Mark Smith, who had missed the previous 17 games with a broken thumb, with 3:42 remaining to bring Alaska within 5-3. The Aces had all kinds of chances over the next three minutes, including a breakaway for Lipsett that ended with him hitting the post, but would draw no closer, and Linglet's penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct with 42 seconds left sealed Alaska's fate. Harrold's power play goal with 5.6 seconds remaining capped the scoring. The Aces outshot the Cyclones, 25-24.
Alaska, whose magic number for clinching the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division remains at four, and Cincinnati meet again Friday and Saturday, with Friday's contest featuring a post-game jersey auction. The Aces (31-24-4) have lost four of their last five games at home and six of eight overall. Both weekend games against the Cyclones start at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
