Texas Wildcatters News Release
Biloxi, MS (March 11, 2004) â The Mississippi Sea Wolves held off the Texas Wildcatters to win game 12 of the Nextel Cup 4-2. Mississippi got off to a quick start as Andrei Lupandin sprung Anthony Battaglia in all alone on Wildcatters goalie Davis Parley at the 2:10 mark of the first period. Battaglia took the feed behind the Texas defense and netted his 18th goal of the season. The Wildcatters fell two seconds short of killing off their 14th straight penalty as Lupandin's shot from the point found its way to the back of the net. Travis Lisabeth and Battaglia assisted on the Mississippi goal that gave them a 2-0 lead after one period of play.
The Wildcatters responded with 13 shots in the second period but couldn't get anything past Mississippi goalie Greg Gardner. The Sea Wolves scored the only goal of the period on the power play to take a 3-0 lead. Steffon Walby moved the puck into the slot area to a wide open Kerry Ellis-Toddington, who buried his sixth goal of the season.
In the third the Wildcatters tried to rally but fell short. Chris Taleircio ripped a shot from the rightwing boards past Gardner to get Texas on the scoreboard. Ashlee Langdone and Aaron MacInnis assisted on Taleircio's third goal of the season. Martin Masa would pull the Wildcatters within one at the 9:24 mark of the third period with his team leading 19th goal of the year. Rob Davison made the play with his hard work in the far corner and passed it to Masa in front of the Mississippi net. Sergei Kuznetsov halted the comeback with an empty net goal with 35 seconds left in the game for Mississippi.
