Cuts for the Cure

Abbotsford Heat News Release

There are few that can say they have never been touched by cancer. In the Abbotsford Heat family, there are many that have watched brave relatives and dear friends fight a near impossible battle.

Abbotsford Heat goalie Leland Irving battled cancer at the young age of 7. His mother discovered a lump above his ear and after a biopsy, they discovered it was cancerous. He was diagnosed with an often terminal cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. After removing the tumor, he endured 13 months of chemotherapy and has now been cancer free for 13 years. With such a personal experience, it is no wonder that Leland feels so strongly about this cause.

"This disease touches everyone and I want to be able to do whatever I can to give back to organizations that assist children and families like they did when I went through this," explains Irving.

The Wives & Girlfriends of the Abbotsford Heat are asking for your help as they come together with the players to raise much needed funding for the BC Cancer Agency at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. On Saturday, April 2nd, following the home game versus the Grand Rapids Griffins, members of the Abbotsford Heat hockey team will have their heads shaved - but for a price. For every $1,000 raised, another player will have his head shaved. And if a business donates it in one lump sum, they automatically get the honours of shearing off the locks themselves.

"We also wanted to make sure that all of the fans of the Heat could participate, even if $1000 isn't attainable by everyone. On game night, you can make a minimum $50 donation and an Abbotsford Heat player will turn the sheers on you," adds Aimee Laing, wife of Captain Quintin Laing. "It's going to be an amazing event to be a part of so I hope the residents of the Fraser Valley can embrace this great cause."
