Curve Surge Continues with 3-1 Win

ALTOONA - The Altoona Curve capped off a successful homestand with a 3-1 win over the first-place Akron Aeros on Thursday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark.
In front of an unenergetic crowd of 5,752 on Super Splash Day, veteran right-hander Dan Reichert turned in one of the better outings of the year by a Curve pitcher.
Reichert (1-1) allowed just one run - a solo home run by Akron's Matt Whitney in the second inning - over 7 1/3 solid innings. Reichert, who started the season with Triple-A Buffalo (Cleveland) before being traded to the Pirates organization, struck out a season high seven batters and allowed just five hits. Reichert did not walk a batter in just his second start in a Curve uniform.
His mound opponent, Kevin Dixon (8-6) was the tough-luck loser. Dixon tossed seven inning and gave up eight hits. He allowed all three Curve runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the fourth, Jason Delaney's RBI double scored Brad Corley to tie the game, 1-1. The very next batter, Jason Bowers provided an RBI single that scored Delaney, which gave the Curve a lead they would not relinquish at 2-1. Miguel Perez provided an insurance run, plating Bowers with an RBI single. That put Altoona ahead, 3-1.
After Reichert left, Dave Davidson came on to toss 2/3 of scoreless relief. For Davidson, it was his final appearance in front of a Blair County Ballpark crowd, as the southpaw will be leaving shortly to participate in the 2008 Olympics and pitch for Team Canada in Beijing, China.
Ronald Belisario slammed the door in the top of the ninth inning, securing his third save of the year.
Over their nine-game homestand, the Curve went 6-3, splitting a four-game set against Harrisburg and taking four out of five against Akron. The Curve drew a total of 42, 328 over the homestand.
The Curve (47-57) will open a seven-game road trip on Friday night starting with a three-game set at Harrisburg at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Kyle Bloom (2-4, 4.09) gets the ball for the Curve, while Harrisburg righty Jordan Zimmermann (4-2, 3.50) takes the stump for the Senators.

Altoona will return home to Blair County Ballpark on Friday, August 1 to open a six-game homestand against the Bowie Baysox and Akron Aeros.
