Iowa Cubs News Release
Behind a quality start by Ramon Ortiz, the Iowa Cubs (21-25) beat the Las Vegas 51s (28-19) 7-3 Wednesday night at Principal Park.
Bryan LaHair put the Cubs on the board in the second inning with his 12th homer of the year. The solo blast to left-center reached the bleachers through winds that were gusting at over 20 mph in from center field. In the third inning, Bobby Scales led off with a double, and scored when Tyler Colvin followed with an RBI-double. Brad Snyder, Marquez Smith, and LaHair strung together consecutive singles, and Ty Wright plated the third Cub run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Wright finished the night 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in his I-Cubs return. The Cubs' 3-4-5 hitters went 7-for-13 with 3 RBI in the game. Snyder, who was celebrating his 29th birthday, highlighted the heart of the Iowa lineup going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Iowa tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth, but the early support was all Ortiz (2-2) needed. He pitched seven innings and gave up three runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked one, in his team-leading fifth quality start of the season.
All three Las Vegas runs were scored off Ortiz in the sixth inning with two outs. Travis Snider singled on a ball just off the glove of a diving Scales at second base to plate the first Vegas run of the night. David Cooper had an RBI-single, and Adam Loewen added an RBI-double to cap the scoring before Ortiz struck out Chris Woodward. The double for Loewen was his fifth of the series.
Brad Mills (4-3) took the loss for the 51s. It marks the first loss in the last ten games for Las Vegas. Mills pitched five innings, gave up four runs on 11 hits and struck out six. The Las Vegas bullpen allowed the final three runs to Iowa, only two of them earned. Blake Parker and John Gaub each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Cubs.
Iowa will look to split the four-game series with the finale tomorrow afternoon at Principal Park. Two southpaws will take the mound, as the Cubs' J.R. Mathes (2-3, 9.08) matches up against Willie Collazo (0-0, 5.32) for the 51s. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
