Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers were held to just four hits on Tuesday night at All Pro Freight Stadium, as they fell in their series opener against the Road Warriors, 4-2.
The loss for the Crushers (48-37) snaps their four game winning streak, while the victory for the Road Warriors (7-18) was their second in four games against the Crushers this season.
Three out of Lake Erie's four hits went for extra bases, while the Road Warriors plated three of their four runs on a homerun from Doug Thennis in the sixth inning.
The scoring began in the bottom of the third. Wally Correa began the inning with a double to the gap in left center. Brian Erie laid a bunt down to move him over to third, and he scored moments later on a squeeze. J.C. Figueroa dropped a bunt down to bring Correa in, snapping a scoreless tie.
Lake Erie maintained that 1-0 advantage until the Road Warriors put a one out rally together in the sixth inning. Wesley Jones was issued a one out free pass, before Mike Schwartz belted a base hit to right, and Dough Thennis capped the frame with a three-run homer.
The Crushers were able to dive into the deficit just a half inning later. Jason Taylor was hit by a pitch, and stole second base before coming home on Andrew Davis's two out single.
Jacob Daniel started the seventh inning with his second hit of the contest, and scored the final run of the contest on Ben Magsig's two out double to left center field.
Lake Erie posed one final threat in the bottom of the ninth. Davis began the inning with a double down the left field line. Robby Kuzdale walked with one out, but was retired at second on a ground ball hit by Adrian Ortiz. Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice, and made it to second on a wild pitch. Chris Kaminsky (6) finished the contest by striking out Kyle Weldon.
Lefty Shawn Marquardt (2-3) scored the victory for the Road Warriors, going seven strong innings and allowed just a pair of runs on three hits while fanning three in the process. Paul Fagan (7-7) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over 5.1 innings of action and struck out six. Kaminsky worked a scoreless ninth inning to score the save.
Davis paced the Crushers offensively, going 2-for-4 on the night with a single, a double, and an RBI. Russ Moldenhauer reached safely twice on the night, with a one out double in the second and a walk in the fourth.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Road Warriors at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night. Right hander Pat Arnold (0-0, 2.91) will start for the Crushers, and the Road Warriors will counter with right hander Sheng-An Kuo (0-4, 6.26). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
