Normal CornBelters News Release

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell 9-6 to Traverse City after a late comeback by the Beach Bums. Traverse City's Jake Sabol (2-0) took the win while Matt Mueller received his eighth save. Normal's Kyle DiMartino (1-2) is credited with the loss.

For the first time in ten games, it was the opposing team that scored first with two runs in the first inning. Traverse City scored when Ryan Still hit a single and was brought home with a two out home run by Chase Burch, the first home run to hit the batter's eye and only the second home run to centerfield in Corn Crib history.

The CornBelters responded with runs of their own when Jesse Olivar hit a triple and came home on a ground out by Tyler Wiesemeyer. Pat McKenna reached first after a Traverse City error and crossed the plate when Steven Felix hit his 11th home run of the season, gaining the lead 3-2.

Normal pulled ahead even further in the fifth inning, adding three more runs to their lead. McKenna started off the scoring with a single, followed by a base hit by Steven Felix. Ernie Banks scored McKenna with a double, leaving Felix at third base. Felix came home with a double by Sam Judah. Randy Wells finished off the inning with a sacrifice fly to bring home Banks, giving the 'Belters a 6-2 advantage.

Traverse City loaded the bases in the eighth inning after a CornBelters' error and scored two on a single by Burch. Two more runs crossed the plate on a double by Jeff Flagg, tying the score at 6-6. The Beach Bums took a 7-6 lead after a sacrifice fly brought home Jeff Flagg to end the scoring of the inning.

The Beach Bums added some insurance in the ninth inning when Kyle Eveland hit a lead off home run. Another run followed when Jose Vargas singled home, leaving the final score at 9-6.

The series will continue tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. at the Corn Crib. The 'Belters will put right-handed pitcher Drew Provence (5-2, 3.59 ERA) on the hill to face Traverse City's right-hander Brooks Belter (9-2, 3.46 ERA).
