
Miners Drop Opener in River City

O'Fallon, MO - The Southern Illionis Miners dropped the opening game to the River City Rascals 7-5 at TR Hughes Ballpark. Miners starter Shawn Gilblair went five innings in earning his fifth loss of the season and allowed three runs off nine hits. He struck out four in his performance.
The Rascals took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off Gilblair then jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run by designated hitter Corey LeVier to give the Rascals a 3-0 lead.
The Miners got on the board off Rascals starter Preston Vancil with a two out two run single by Cory Harrilchak to bring the Miners within one run 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Darrin Tew came in to relief and pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Miners.
River City scored three runs off Darrin Tew in the bottom of the seventh inning with only one out to take a 6-2 lead. Miners reliever Reese McGraw came into relief to record the final two outs to keep it at a four run deficit. The Miners scored a run in the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run by Javier Herrera, his fourth since joining the Miners to bring them within three runs 6-3. River City scored one more run off a wild pitch by reliever Steven Grife in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Rascals a 7-3 lead.
With the Miners trailing by four runs in the top of the ninth inning, former Miner reliever Albert Ayala came in for River City. Ayala recorded one out but gave up a two run double by Javier Herrera to bring the Miners within two runs for a 7-5 contest. Jason Sullivan came in to relieve Ayala and struck out Chad Maddox with one out. Ken Gregory was walked intentionally walked with two outs and got Carlos Mendez to ground out to end the game and give River City the win 7-5.
With the loss, the Miners fall to 49-35 on the season. The Miners will send Cody Hall to the mound in Wednesday's match up against River City in search of his ninth win. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
