Home of the Florence Freedom- Florence, KY

Game #85 - Road Game #40 (35-49), (17-22)

Last time out...

Joliet lost 2-1 on Sunday in their sixth consecutive defeat. Lake Erie scored the game's first run in the third inning when Adrian Ortiz launched a solo home run deep to right field. They would strike again in the fifth off an RBI single from Brian Erie for the insurance run. The Slammers struck back in the seventh to cut the lead in half. After a pair of walks to lead off the inning, Matt Mirabal laced a run-scoring single into the outfield to make it 2-1. But Crushers pitching escaped the inning and forced Joliet to strand runners in scoring position in the eighth inning, as well, stopping the comeback in its tracks. Jim Schult threw a gem for Joliet, going eight innings on just two runs while striking out three. Geoff Brown tossed near-perfect relief on just one hit. Eric Gonzales-Diaz earned the win for Lake Erie, and at one point set down 13 straight Slammers.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell is coming off a rough outing against the Traverse City Beach Bums on August 15 as he went four innings, giving up six runs in 10 hits in a 9-1 loss for Joliet. The Slammers have averaged fewer than two runs a game in Maxwell's 8 losses this season. He leads the team in wins with 6. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
