Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL - For the second straight ballgame, the Traverse City Beach Bums used a five-run frame in the late innings to score a 9-6 come from behind win against the Normal CornBelters.
The win, coupled with a Schaumburg loss to Evansville drops the Traverse City magic number to make the playoffs to four.
Trailing 6-2 heading into the eighth, Ryan Still got things started for the Beach Bums with a single. Brian Heere followed with a walk and Jose Vargas reached on an error to load the bases. Chase Burch stood in and lined a single to center to plate Still and Heere, slicing the lead to 6-4. A pitching change did not help matters as Jeff Flagg came up and drove a Kyle DiMartino offering to the base of the wall in rightfield to bring home Vargas and Burch and tie the game. After a wild pitch moved Flagg to third, Sean Gusrang would hit a sac fly to center to score the TC first baseman, making it 7-6.
Traverse City would extend the lead in the ninth as Kyle Eveland led off with his third homer of the season. Still followed with a walk and two batters later, came home on a Vargas single to push the advantage to 9-6.
Meanwhile, while the offense was getting the job done late, so was the Traverse City bullpen. The triumvirate of Jake Sabol, Scott Mueller and Matt Miller threw four perfect innings, holding the Normal offense at bay allowing the TC hitters to go to work. Sabol (2-0) got the win with two innings of work while Miller picked up his eighth save.
The Beach Bums got the initial runs of the game in the first inning when with Still on first following a leadoff single, Burch clocked his 13th homer of the year over the centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead. Normal would respond with three runs each in the third and fifth innings to go up 6-2, setting up the late game drama.
Game two of the series comes up on Wednesday night with Brooks Belter (9-2, 3.46) taking the hill for Traverse City against Drew Provence (5-2, 3.59) for the CornBelters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 7:10 p.m. For tickets to all Beach Bums home games, call 943-0100, visit tcbeachbums.com or stop by the Wuerfel Park ticket office.
