Washington Wild Things News Release

Loves Park, IL - The Washington Wild Things defeated the Rockford Riverhawks 3-1 at the Road Ranger Field Tuesday.

Impressive pitching and defensive play were the keys to the Washington victory.

A pitching duel set the stage between the two teams - no runs scored until the fifth inning when A.J. Nunziato doubled and Rick Devereaux reached base on an error. Jim Vahalik's sacrifice fly drove in Nunziato, and Darian Sanford singled to plate Devereaux.

Rockford struck back in the bottom of the inning cutting the Wild Things' lead to one, but the Washington retrieved their two run lead in the sixth inning when Gus Benusa scored on an error.

Casey Barnes (5-7) got the win. Barnes allowed one run on five hits, walking three and striking out three in 5.2 innings on the hill. Alfonso Yevoli, Chandler Barnard, and Orlando Santos combined for the remaining innings. Santos picked up his ninth save allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial and the Rockford Riverhawks meet for the second game in this three game series Wednesday night when first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 EDT. Air time on WJPA 95.3 FM is 7:55 p.m. The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park for their final six games of the 2012 season on Tuesday the 28th.
