Lake Erie Crushers News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Lake Erie Crushers stranded seven runners in scoring position against the Rockford Aviators on Friday evening, and dropped the series opener to the Aviators, 5-2.
The Crushers (10-15) have now lost four out of their last five games, while the win for the Aviators (5-19) was their second in their last three games.
Lake Erie had an opportunity to draw first blood in the third inning, but could not cash in. The Crushers had the bases loaded with two out, when Andrew Davis ended the inning with a fly out right.
Rockford snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, with a little two-out thunder. Eric Bainer was hit by a pitch with two down, and the next batter, Matt Greener smashed a two-run homer, his second of the year to give the Aviators a 2-0 lead.
The Crushers cut the deficit in half with a pair of extra base hits. Davis belted Lake Erie's first extra base hit of the game, a one out double, and he came home moments later on Russ Moldenhauer's first of two doubles on the night.
A crucial two out error paved the way for a three-run sixth inning for the Aviators. They had a runner on second with two outs, when Bainer hit a ground ball at Juan Sanchez, that was too hot to handle, which allowed a run to score. Two batters later, Michael Hur delivered a big two-run double to give the Aviators a 5-1 lead.
Back-to-back two out doubles plated Lake Erie's final run of the contest in the top of the eighth inning. Moldenhauer belted his second double of the night with two outs, and came home a few moments later on Emmanuel Quiles's two bagger to the gap in left center.
Trevor Harden (2-3) allowed a run on five hits over six innings of action and scored the win, while Nick Cicio (3) tossed a perfect ninth inning to score the save. Matt Rein (2-3) lost on the road for the first time this season, allowing five runs, only two earned on five hits over 5.2 innings of work.
Moldenhauer and Granger paced the Crushers with two hits apiece. Davis's double in the sixth inning extended his hitting streak to 15 games, while Quiles's RBI double in the eighth inning gives him hits in 11 out of his last 12 games.
The Crushers will continue their three game series against the Rockford Aviators at Aviator Stadium on Saturday night. The Crushers will start right hander Devyn Rivera (0-1, 5.14) and the Aviators will start left hander Jon Gulbransen (1-1, 3.60). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
