Beach Bums Break Open Game Late to Win

June 14, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums sent 12 men to the plate in a seven-run eighth inning as the Beach Bums won their third straight game, downing the Joliet Slammers 12-2 in front of 3,821 fans at Wuerfel Park on Friday night.

Traverse City got the scoring started in the third as with one out, Ryan Still walked. Taylor Wrenn grounded a ball back to the mound that Jolliet starter Corey Kimes fielded cleanly, but his throw to second pulled the cover man off the bag, allowing Still to be safe. The defensive miscue proved costly as Jose Vargas singled to score Still and move Wrenn to third. Chase Burch followed with a single to score Wrenn and make it 2-0 TC.

Joliet made their only offensive noise of the night in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on RBI doubles from David Christiansen and Nick Akins to tie the game at 2-2. The inning was stemmed as Scott Dunn worked out of a second and third, one out jam by striking out Ben Hewett and getting Marquis Riley on a groundout.

The Beach Bums responded in the bottom of the inning as with two out, Vargas walked and Burch homered to left to make it 4-2. The inning didn't end there as the newest TC player, Carlo Testa, hustled down the line on a ground ball to second that was bobbled by Riley. Testa then stole second and came in to score on a double by Zach Kometani to push the lead to 5-2.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the eighth when Traverse City exploded as the first nine batters in the inning reached. Highlighting the inning was a two-run homer from Kometani and a bases loaded double from Wrenn. The double extended his hitting streak to 18 games, tying him with former Beach Bums All-Star Matt Brown for the fourth longest streak in team history.

It wasn't just offense that ruled the day, however, as Dunn (5-0) made some history on the mound. In striking out Grant DeBruin to end the first the right-hander became just the third Traverse City pitcher to whiff 200 batters in his career. Dunn finished the night with four punchouts, giving him 203 in a Beach Bums uniform, moving him past Ryan Gehring and into second place all alone on the TC career list. It was also the 20th win for Dunn as a Beach Bum, joining Gehring and David Nathanson as the only pitchers to accomplish the feat.

Game two of the series comes up on Saturday where it is a Salute to Soldiers Saturday presented by Cherry Wings Realty, Exit Realty, Linn Energy, Northern Michgan Glass, and Rosegate Residential Care. Veterans and active duty military members receive half price admission with their military ID on Saturday and every night of the week and the Beach Bums will be wearing special Digital Camo Jerseys. Johnny Omahen will start for Traverse City against Evan Anundsen for Joliet. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
