Normal CornBelters News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped a pitcher's duel in the first of a six-game road trip, 3-2 to the Gateway Grizzlies on Friday night at GCS Ballpark. The series in the St. Louis Metro East area continues Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

The Grizzlies scored first in the bottom of the opening frame with a two-out rally begun by Chris McLendon's single and an RBI double off the left field wall by Landon Hernandez. The hosts increased the lead to 2-0 with a solo home run to right field by Vladimir Frias with two outs in the second inning. Another two-out home run, this one in the fourth inning by Michael Pair, gave the Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage.

After Grizzlies starter Tucker Jensen faced the minimum number of CornBelters through 7 1/3 innings despite giving up three hits, Normal broke through in the eighth with a one-out single from Romulo Ruiz and an RBI triple off the center field wall by Matt Wright. A passed ball allowed Wright to score to cut the Grizzlies lead to 3-2.

Jensen (3-0) earned the win with an eight-inning, five-hit, five-strikeout performance. Normal starter Luis Noel (2-1) went 6.2 innings in the loss. Richard Barrett earned his league-leading eighth save.
